Abstract
Ludwig¢¥ s angina is a severe cellulitis beginning usually in the submadibular space and 2ndarily involving the sublingual and submental space as well.
The patient with Ludwig¢¥ s angina manifests a rapidly developing boardlike swelling of the floor of mouth conequent elevation ofthe tongue.
The sweling is firm, painful and diffuse, showing no evidence of localization. There is difficulty in eating and swallowing as well as on breathing.
The treatment for Ludwig¢¥ sangina includes prompt and definitive mangement of the airway by tracheostomy, and incision with thorough drainage of the spaces involved in the in the infection.
Intensive antibiotic therapy is also used.
Although acute orofacial infections are relatively uncommon, constant awareness of the potential life--threatening nature of some should never be overlooked.
